Two thirds of Britain will be online by 2006Posted 30/07/2004
Two -thirds of the British population will be online by 2006, according to research by Mintel International Group Ltd.
The latest research from Mintel, reveals that Internet usage is soaring despite widespread belief that the market had already plateaued at almost 50 per cent of adults.
Over the last three months, the study reveals that Internet access has surged ahead of this figure to 57 per cent of all adults.
This represents one of the largest growth spurts in recent years and is equivalent to an increase of some 3 million people.
As a result a staggering 27.8 million Britons are now online.
Commenting on the trend, Mintel retail analyst Neil Mason said: "It would appear that much of this sudden growth in Internet penetration levels is being driven by a rapid expansion in the numbers of broadband Internet users in response to a stepping up of the marketing efforts by the various broadband service providers."
Mintel forecasts that penetration levels are likely to reach a maximum of three quarters of all adults.
In the short-term, the group predicts that six in ten will be online in 6 months time, while the figure will reach 67 per cent over the next 2 years. © DeHavilland Information Services plc
