Google rules in the USPosted 27/08/2004
More than 40 per cent of American internet users visited Google's homepage during June, according to recent research.
A study, conducted by market research company ComScore Networks, placed Google at the top of its poll.
The recently listed search engine provider took over a third of traffic of the top 25 search engines.
Google accounted for 34.5 per cent of the 3.9 billion web searches carried out during June.
In second place came main rival Yahoo with 29.2 per cent, whilst Microsoft's MSN service took just under 16 per cent of the traffic.
However, according to ComScore, Yahoo still has the highest number of users with 60 million using its search service, followed by Google with 58 million users and MSN has an estimated 48 million users.
The results are disappointing for MSN who could find their advertising revenue declining as companies move towards sites with higher traffic numbers.
The study also discovered that US users spent on average 41 minutes visiting search engines, conducting 33 searches, but often users only scrolled through the first 1.8 pages of results.
