Google to face lawsuitPosted 03/09/2004
The search engine giant Google is facing legal action from the insurance firm Geico.
Google, along with search marketer Overture, stands accused of selling advertisements linked to Geico's trademark. According to CNET News a federal court backed the claims in an unpublicised ruling last week.
"We find that plaintiffs have alleged facts sufficient to support their claims that advertisers make a 'trademark use' of Geico's marks and that defendants may be liable for such trademark use," the ruling reportedly said.
Google and Overture are said to have made commercial gains from using trademarks from firms such as Geico and sportswear giant Nike.
The case comes just weeks after Google floated on the US stock market in one of the biggest IPOs of the year.
