Amazon adds new string to its bowPosted 16/09/2004
Amazon has officially unveiled its new Internet search engine.
The new site, A9.com, an independent unit of the online retailer, expands on and organises features of the beta version of the site, launched in test form in April.
Competition is hotting up for the search crown, with many of the biggest names on the web launching their own search engines and a wealth of smaller, more tailored engines springing up in cyberspace.
A9 lets users navigate, annotate and store web pages they have visited and recommends sites based on users' past preferences.
A9 organizes query results into expandable columns displayed with a list of links and summaries. The branded toolbar also records users' web-browsing history, though customers must register to see their personalised search history.
Under the hood, A9 is powered by technology from Google and Amazon's Alexa subsidiary, and it draws on reference information from GuruNet and the Internet Movie Database, among other sources. It also displays Google-sponsored ad listings.
