Google Local gets betterPosted 17/09/2004
Google has unveiled a series of improvements to its Google Local service.
The new local offering from the search giant has a greater focus on maps and providing more relevant results.
Google has integrated maps onto local result pages, pinpointing businesses from the listings on the maps and allowing users to zoom and pan directions without reloading the webpage.
Google's other local enhancements include expanding the number of indexed webpages that it searches to retrieve local results and "improved relevancy technology" to better target results to queries, the company announced.
A research project launched as a public beta in March, Google Local is the search company's attempt to compete with the increasing number of local search sites cropping up online.
Google Local combines results from the web with business-directory information to display local business listings and information. Users can conduct local searches either from its main web query or from its Google Local site.
