Google browser buzzPosted 24/09/2004
The Internet company is rumoured to have registered a domain name, applied for a patent and hired a number of new staff.
Google registered the domain name "gbrowser.com" on April 26th, according to a record at the WhoIs domain-name database.
The web browser would be likely to incorporate Google search, Gmail free email, Google's Blogger web publishing software and pop-up blocking technology.
A US newspaper reported that Google has poached four former Microsoft workers who created early versions of the Internet Explorer browser and the new Longhorn operating system.
Google recently played host to the Mozilla Developer Day at its Mountain View, California, campus. Analysts predict that Mozilla, which operates its own browser, called Firefox, could contribute code to a Google browser.
The search company is also rumoured to be working on an instant messaging application, a file storage system, and a thin-client operating system.
Google has denied that it is planning to launch a web browser and a spokeswoman said that the company had a policy of not commenting on rumour and speculation. The company recently launched a $1.66 billion public offering and speculation has been rife about possible future projects for the search giant.
