Yahoo unveils new designsPosted 29/09/2004
The Internet giant intends to roll out beta versions of both pages on a phased basis in preparation for a full re-launch this autumn.
The new Yahoo.com allows users to alter the graphical buttons flanking the top logo to link to their preferred Yahoo sites, while links to other properties have been reorganised below the search bar in alphabetical order rather than by category.
The Yahoo directory has been reduced to a banner-sized area at the bottom of the page and a tab on the search bar, while content boxes to entertainment news and "buzz index" search rankings have been made bigger.
Changes in My Yahoo include a live launch of its web syndication service based on RSS technology, allowing users to search for content based on topics and create feeds from news sites and web logs.
"The Yahoo Front Page and My Yahoo, the most popular start pages on the internet, just got better so that it is even easier for consumers to start the tasks they want and get them done the way they need," said Geoff Ralston, chief product officer, Yahoo Inc.
Yahoo has been testing new versions of its home page since spring and new versions of My Yahoo since January.
Amazon.com and eBay recently launched RSS feeds for shoppers, as the technology becomes increasingly popular, and Microsoft has also added RSS support throughout its web properties.
