Yahoo launches new local search servicePosted 03/08/2004
Internet giant Yahoo Inc has unveiled a new test version of a local search engine that aims to cash in on local advertising.
The new site, a direct challenge to web rival Google's own local search service, provides users with phone numbers, maps, ratings and reviews for a range of services.
Yahoo is attempting to capitalise on the local advertising market, worth billions of dollars. The Sunnyvale-based company claims the new site - http://local.yahoo.com - is a major leap in recent efforts to fine tune local search capabilities.
"We think this is a first product that crystallizes the power of local search," said Paul Levine, general manager of Yahoo Local.
Mr Levine revealed that Yahoo has partnered with a number of companies for its data, in order to ensure the local search site is comprehensive.
Yahoo reportedly plans to revise some features of the test version based on user feedback. The internet firm is not currently linking to the local search engine from its main website. © DeHavilland Information Services plc
