Real slashes online download pricesPosted 18/08/2004
Media software firm RealNetworks has halved the price of its music downloads.
The company is now offering songs for $0.49 each, down from $0.99, with albums available for just $4.99.
Real is aiming to boost its share of the online music market with the price cuts, which will reportedly last for a limited but unspecified period.
Advertisements for the campaign feature the slogan: "Half the price of Apple. Welcome to freedom of choice."
Real rival Apple dominates the market for online music via its iTunes service, which typically sells individual songs for $0.99.
The RealNetworks price cuts coincide with the public launch of the firm's latest RealPlayer jukebox software. The new software allows users of Apple's iPod portable music player to play tracks downloaded from the RealNetworks website
